Kati was a Cherokee woman

Biography

Kati was the daughter of the famous Cherokee Nan-ye-hi "Nancy" Ward and her first husband, Kingfisher. She was born at at time when Cherokee people did not have "last" or family names and their clan was their family. Ka-ti was a member of the Wolf Clan. Her birthdate is unknown but is estimated at 1752-53 since her mother was born about 1735 and her father was killed in battle in 1755. Emmet Starr listed her as "Catherine" but records only list her as 'Kati,' 'Katie,' or 'Katy'. [1] Kati had three white husbands, Samuel Candy, John Walker, and Ellis Harlan, and nine children. Nothing is known of her first two husbands but their names. Ka-ti married trader Ellis Harlan about 1778. She had one son, Samuel Candy, Jr. with her first husband and one son, John Walker and one daughter, Jennie Walker with her second husband.

Following is a list of her children with her third husband Ellis Harlan:

Child: Nancy Harlan
Child: George Harlan
Child: Ezekiel Harlan
Child: Ruth Harlan
Child: Sallie Sarah Harlan
Child: Elizabeth Harlan

Ellis Harlan died about 1815. In 1817 Kati, her mother, her daughter Jenny and ten other women signed a petition opposing yet another land cession. [2] She took a reservation of land at 'Pumpkin Town" in 1818, but was unable to take possession. She filed a claim for the land which was disallowed. [3] Kati died about 1830. She is known to have been alive in 1824, but was not mentioned by her Harlan children when they went to court over a bill due to their father from losses during the Revolutionary War in the 1830's.[4]
