About Katherein Nicoll
KATHEREINE NICOLL
Kathereine Nicoll is the mother of James Mudie, the bastard son of Francis Mudie of Melsetter She and her son James are named in a divorce petition, dated 22 November 1627, which Marion Tulloch presented to the Archbishop of St. Andrews. Kathereine Nicoll was expecting another child at this time, although It is not yet clear if the pregnancy went to full term, or if it did what sex the child was. [Orkney Archives, Orkney Library and Archive, Kirkwall, George W. Reid Collection, reference D20/4/7/2]
According to Marion Tulloch's above mentioned petition, Kathereine Nicoll and Francis Mudie of Melsetter were in a long-term relationship which was already well established before she and Francis were married. The date of her marriage to Francis is not known but they were married before 1 December 1625 National Records of Scotland, Papers of the Scarth Family of Breckness, Orkney, reference GD217/60 and it seems possible, therefore, that Kathereine Nicoll is the mother of some others if not actually all of the other bastard children of the Laird of Melsetter.
