Richard Acton was a Maryland colonist.

Questionable Origin

Richard Acton was likely born in the Severn River Valley in the English county of Shropshire. There are many families, some of the gentry, with this name in this area and Richard and John are very commonly used first names in these families. He may be related to the Henry Acton of Longnor, England who emigrated to Maryland in the early 1700s and married this man's granddaughter, Ann Marriot.

1649 Marriage

Katherine's only known husband, Richard Acton, claimed several hundred acres in Maryland by patents that mentions people transported into Maryland. None of these mention a wife named Katherine. This leads to the assumption that Katherine was iving in Anne Arundel County when she married Richard Acton. Estimated from births of children, she married about 1649, a year that many Puritans migrated from Virginia to Providence, now Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

She sometimes appears in genealogies as a child of Matthew Howard who was born about 1609 and migrated to Lower Norfolk County, Virginia. Research which appears on Matthew Howard's profile indicates that he was the father of seven children, but no proof that Katherine was one of them.

When Richard died in 1672 he was the father of five known children. The names of these children are taken from the will of his son, John. They are:

2. Sarah Acton (ca. 1655-1724) m. Peter Porter & John Marriott
3. Katherine Acton (ca. 1660-1734) m. John Buck & Theophilus Kitton
4. Elizabeth Acton (ca. 1662-?) m. Unknown Smith
5. Jane Acton (ca. 1665-?) m. possibly William Macubbin
