About Katherine Astley
Katherine Ashley (or Astley) née Champernowne (circa 1502–1565) was governess to Elizabeth I and was a close friend in later life, known to the Queen as 'Kat', and it is by the name 'Kat Ashley' that she is generally known to history. She should not be confused with her niece Catherine Champernowne, mother of Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Humphrey Gilbert
Katherine "Kat" Ashley, was governess to Princess Elizabeth Tudor throughout most of her childhood. She was possibly the youngest daughter of Sir John Champernowne and Margaret Courtenay. She married John Ashley, a gentleman of the court and a distant relative of Anne Boleyn in 1545. She replaced Elizabeth's previous governess, Lady Bryan, and remained with Elizabeth until her death in 1565.
