About Katherine Saxby
MRS. KATHARINE SAXBY. WELL KNOWN ON COAST. TE PUIA, this day. The daughter of one of New Zealand's pioneering families, Mrs. Katharine Saxby, died this morning in Te Puia Hospital. The deceased was well known on the Coast, where she had lived for the past 12 years, and a great deal of sympathy will be extended to her sons and near relatives. She had enjoyed good health until illness compelled her to enter hospital five weeks ago. The youngest of a family of 13, Mrs. Saxby was born in 1851 in Nelson. Her father, Dr. Greenwood, was one of the early settlers in the Nelson district and in the first years of Nelson College was appointed headmaster of the school. The deceased married Mr. Gordon H. Saxby in 1872 in Hawke's Bay. For 35 years her husband was the manager of St. Lawrence station and then the couple settled in Napier for eight years. From there they went to Auckland and Mrs. Saxby remained in the city until the death of her husband 15 years ago. Shortly afterwards she came to Gisborne, and then went to reside with her sons, Messrs. Ronald and Wilfred Saxby, at Waikura station, Hicks Bay. They are the only two of a family of five who survived their mother. After a short service at 2.30 p.m. to-morrow in the Church of England, Tokomaru Bay, the funeral will leave for the Tokomaru Bay cemetery. (Poverty Bay Herald, Nov. 19, 1937).
