About Keōua Pe'eale, High Chief of Hawai`i
Most scholars of Hawaiian history can't offer much information on this High Chief Keoua Pe'eale after the death of his identical twin brother Keoua Kuahu'ula. Documented history followed the course of the conqueror (Kamehameha), while the conquered in most cases appears to simply vanish from history and held sacred only by a few outside of their direct posterity. Such is the case with High Chief Keoua Pe'eale.
After the death of Keoua Kuahu'ula, Keoua Pe'eale continued to fight against Kamehameha along side chiefs willing to contend with the conqueror on every island. He was there and assisted the battles on Maui when Maui lost their sovereignty. Keoua Pe'eale was there with the opposing forces at Nu'uanu as they fought all the way to the Pali. Keoua Pe'eale also jumped and was amongst the few that survived the leap. It was reported that Kamehameha instructed his men to look for the body of Keoua Pe'eale but no body was found, because he lived. He eventually made his way to Kauai where he changed his name to Makane'ole to forever conceal his true identity. The Makane'ole family maintains Keoua Pe'eale's chants of sadness for the lost of his Ka'u family, his rank, and lifestyle.
