Kjetil Flatnese (norrøn:Ketil flatnefr) var en norsk herse som levde på midten av 800-tallet. Han eide land i den nordlige delen av Norge, men vi vet ikke sikkert hvor. Kjetil er kjent som vikinghøvding aktiv på de britiske øyer. Han erobret Hebridene og Man. Noen kilder referer til ham som «kongen av Sudrøyene» men det finnes ikke bevis for at han selv tok kongenavn. Han hadde blitt utpekt til å herske over disse øyene på vegne av Harald Hårfagre, men da han unnlot å betale skatt ble han erklært fredløs. Mesteparten av hans familie emigrerte etterhvert til Island. When Harald Halfdanarson decided to expand his kingdom from southeast Norway many fled and would raid Norway in summers from around Scotland. For this reason he set sail to upproot the Viking attackers and won the Hebrides (Ivar, brother to Rollo who won Normandy, fell there) and the Isle of Man and a part of Scotland but as he had returned the Irish and the Scot and Vikings raided them at which point Harald, back in Norway, sent Ketill to re-win them. He did so but paid no tax at which point Harald took possession of what he owned in Norway and sent away his sons. Some sources refer to him as "King of the Sudreys" but there is little evidence that he himself claimed that title. Most of his family eventually emigrated to Iceland.

Ketill's wife was Yngvild Ketilsdóttir, daughter of Ketill Wether, a hersir from Ringarike. They had a number of children, including Bjǫrn the Easterner, Helgi Bjola; Aud the Deep-Minded, and Thorunn.

Ketill's daughter Aud married Olaf the White, King of Dublin. Their son, Thorstein the Red, briefly conquered much of northern Scotland during the 870s and 880s before he was killed in battle. Aud and many members of her clan settled in the Laxdael region of Iceland.

Kona Ketils var Yngvildur Ketilsdóttir og áttu þau synina Björn austræna og Helga bjólu og dæturnar Auði djúpúðgu og Þórunni hyrnu en einnig átti Ketill dótturina Jórunni manvitsbrekku. Haraldur hárfagri sendi að sögn Ketil til Suðureyja til að vinna þær aftur af Skotum og Írum, sem höfðu náð völdum í eyjunum á ný eftir að Haraldur hvarf heim til Noregs eftir frækilega herför. Ketill setti Björn son sinn yfir ríki sitt í Noregi og fór síðan og lagði undir sig allar Suðureyjar. Hann gerðist sjálfur höfðingi yfir eyjunum en galt Haraldi konungi enga skatta. Því reiddist konungur, tók undir sig eignir Ketils í Noregi og rak Björn son hans á brott.

Björn hélt þá til Suðureyja og síðan til Íslands, nam land á Snæfellsnesi og bjó í Bjarnarhöfn. Hann var eina barn Ketils sem ekki tók kristni. Helgi bjóla nam land á Kjalarnesi og bjó á Hofi. Þórunn hyrna giftist Helga magra Eyvindarsyni landnámsmanni í Eyjafirði og Auður hélt til Íslands eftir að Þorsteinn sonur hennar féll og faðir hennar andaðist og nam land í Dölum. Sonur Jórunnar, Ketill fíflski, hélt einnig til Íslands, nam land á Síðu og bjó í Kirkjubæ.

The Norwegian king appointed him the ruler of these islands, but he failed to pay tribute to Harald Fairhair and was outlawed. Most of his family eventually emigrated to Iceland.

Ketil was one of the heroes of the old Norse sagas. he was a companion of Harald Hårfragre on an expedition to the Scottish Isles in the ninth century. His son-in-law, Olaf, who was King of the Vikings in Dublin gave Ketil the assignment to rid the Hebrides of Danish raiders. After doing so, he established himself as King of the Hebrides, although he had to submit himself to Olaf. Kjetil Flatnev (Flatnese) belonged to a Christian clan. Was also ruler of the South Orkneys. Together with his daughter's son, Torstein Raude, he devastated Scotland.

Fra VF. Kjetil Flatnev (Flatnese) tilhørte en kristnet ætt. Han gjorde motstand mot Harald Hårfagre, som etter sitt vesterhavstokt ca 870 hadde satt ham til høvding over Suderøyene. Sammen med sin dattersønn Torstein Raude herjet han i Skotland. Han måtte flykte for kongen fra Suderøyene. Han og hans ætt hørte til Harald Hårfagres bitreste fiender.
