About Ella von Paus

Gabriele (or Gabrielle) Stein, nicknamed Ella.

Born on 20 October 1883 in Vienna, died 3 November 1971 in Oslo.

She was the daughter of the lawyer (Hof- und Gerichtsadvocat) in Vienna August Stein (1852–1890) and Josefine Elisabeth Wagner (1850–1933). Her father was Jewish, while her mother was baptized as a Catholic in 1850. Her parents married in the Viennese Jewish community in 1877. Her father August grew up in the Jewish quarter near Judenplatz. In 1877 her father left the Jewish community (cf. Anna Staudacher (2009). «... meldet den Austritt aus dem mosaischen Glauben»: 18000 Austritte aus dem Judentum in Wien, 1868–1914: Namen – Quellen – Daten. Peter Lang. p. 8. ISBN 9783631558324. «Stein, Dr.jur. August (...)»).

On 23 May 1885 Ella and her brothers Arthur (b. 1878) and Otto (b. 1885) were baptized as Catholics in St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna. The following year, both on 28 January 1886, their father was baptized as a Catholic and their parents married in a Catholic ceremony, despite already being married for nine years.

On 8 April 1908 in Vienna, Ella married Lieutenant Thorleif (von) Paus, the Norwegian Consular Secretary in Vienna and de facto main representative in Austria-Hungary who was later formally promoted to Vice-Consul and acting Consul-General.
