About Kunhathi Amma Puthalath
She would have been the first woman to cross Kora Puzha (Women crossing this river was considered Brasht by the North Malabar Community & gets excommunicated) in the 1920's joining her husband to Rangoon. Ship Travel with children during those days in 2nd class was a real ordeal. She had the opportunity of seeing the Andaman Islands (Kala-pani) then. She has undergone the ordeal of her ship getting caught in a storm in the Bay of Bengal, when communication facilities were very poor, that the Madras Port had hoisted a blak flag in mourning for the ship they thought as destroyed, when it arrived a week later.
She returned to India in 1924 and was single handedly managing the household & education of children , until grand father returned for good in 1937. She was a bold, efficient & hard working lady, respected by the local people.
