Text: Silas Massey was over seven feet tall and weighed around 500 pounds. he was devilish and full of life. He was a great swimmer and often would go down to the Massey Shoals on Generostee Creek, push away the logs used to walk across on, and when people would come to cross on their way "a-courting," he would tell them he would carry them across. About half way across he would stumble and let then fall in the water...just for the fun of it.
He was quite wealthy owing over 100 slaves. During the war he had two large chests of gold. He took two of his trusted slaves, placed the gold in large wash pots, covered the gold with lard, took the slaves in the clllar and showed them how to remove the plank, and placed the pots of gold down there. When the raiders came, at gun point, they made the slaves tell where the gold was buried. OPn of them became so excited he told them it was under the lard in the pots which they had found.
Along with the gold, the raders took all of his fine saddle horses. it is said he had over $10,000 in gold, and about seventy years ago some of the family made an effort, to no avail, to make the Federal government repay them, but could produce no proof.
A descendant (now, 1967) has the wash pot in which the gold was hidden. She lives in Hona Path, SC
