Biography

Noel Massey married Lucinda Freeman in Franklin County NC in 1775. They are shown on the 1787 Abbeville District SC census and on the 1790,1810 and 1820 Pendleton District census. Pendleton District later became Anderson County SC.

His burial place is about a mile and half from Barkers Creek Church on Barkers Creek Road on the left. It is uncertain whether Lucinda was buried there or not. She died in 1826 and he in 1828.

Issues and Disclaimers

Identity of Wife

The identity of Noel's wife is a contentious issue among Massey researchers. No evidence seems to be cited in online trees for "Lucinda" or "Lucinda Freeman" other than other people's trees. (Still, it's worth noting as a possibility; we need to know why it was suggested in the first place.)

Unfortunately, theories sometimes try to masquerade as facts, which is the case with the "obituary" presented on the FindaGrave memorial for Noel's daughter Nancy. After the start of the obituary, it reads "Daughter of Noel Posey Massey 1755-1828 & Lucinda Freeman 1756-1826. Both parents died in Anderson County, South Carolina." The formatting makes it look like her parents' names were printed as part of the obituary. However, this is not the case. Below are links to Newspaper.com (subscription site) images of the original printings as well as a transcription (free site):

  • Page 3 of the 21 September 1876 issue of The Intelligencer (Anderson County, South Carolina)
  • Page 3 of the 5 October 1876 issue of The Intelligencer (Anderson County, South Carolina) (same as FindaGrave obituary except without mention of parents)
  • Transcribed versions of the above from a 12 September 2006 post by Joy King on the SC-GENEALOGY list at Rootsweb.

Nancy's brother Silas' obituary ran the week before (14 September 1876, page 3) in the same paper, also without mentioning parents.

Given the number of Noel Massey descendants who have taken autosomal DNA tests, through segment triangulation we may eventually have a stronger theory as to the identity of his wife.

Date of Death

Anderson County Cemeteries says that Noel died in 1834, not 1828. However, the information in that book was written after the cemetery disappeared, and its ultimate source is also unknown. Furthermore, researcher Cari M. has located a transcript of an 1828 land transfer (linked below) in which Noel is listed as deceased. His death date here has been adjusted here to be before the date on the transfer.

Name

Noel is often given "Posey" as a nickname or middle name in online family trees. The source for this sobriquet is unknown.

Quality of Citations

Note that many of the sources in the various items of biographical data below are compilation databases and that in some cases the information in them comes from similar databases (sometimes including those already cited), and that in all of these cases, the actual source for the information is unknown.

The specificity of some of the information in these databases, such as exact dates, suggests validity, but it should be keep in mind that nuances like "before" and "after" are often lost as information is copied, and what may seem like a specific date for a birth/marriage/death is actually an estimate or narrowing-down based on a completely different record (deed, administration, etc.) with that date.
