Lady Georgina Sophia Vernon, whose death has taken place at South Bank, Worcestershire, was the oldest living descendant of the famous Lady Grizel Baillie, whose heroism as a girl saved the life of her father, the first Earl of Marchmont. In an article in the "Southern" several months ago, we described how she conveyed food to him by night to the vaults of Polwarth Church, where he, in peril of his life, found concealment until he escaped abroad.

Lady Georgina was the last survivor of the nine children of the 10th Earl of Haddington. Her eldest brother was the late Earl, Lord-Lieutenant of Haddingtonshire, K.T., and a distinguished ornithologist. Her second brother, the late Major the Hon. Robert Baillie Hamilton, had been M.P. for Berwickshire. The present and 12th Earl of Haddington is Lady Georgina's great nephew.

In 1861 Lady Georgina married Sir Harry Foley Vernon, 1st Baronet of Hanbury Hall, and M.P. for East Worcestershire. Sir Harry died in 1920, when Lady Georgina's only surviving son, now Sir (Bowater) George Hamilton Vernon, succeeded to the title and estate. Lady Georgina is also survived by one daughter, wife of Lieutenant-Colonel T. A. Hill.
