MARGARET ELIZABETH HOPE BEWES was the eldest child of REGINALD ANSTIS BEWES of Plymouth by his wife ALICE ANNE ELIZABETH (nee HOPE). She was born at Braeside, Plymouth on 20 June 1889, and was baptised at Charles, Plymouth. She was educated at Moorfield, Mannamead, Plymouth and at Clifton High School, Bristol.

Her first marriage in 1912 to Richard Bayley was unfortunately of less than five weeks duration.

On 31 March 1917, the engagement was announced of MARGARET ELIZABETH HOPE BAYLY of Loose Leigh, Crown Hill, South Devon, widow of RICHARD BAYLY of Torr, Plymouth, and daughter of the late REGINALD ANSTIS BEWES of Plymouth, to Lieutenant ERNEST RUSSELL ARCHER, RN, younger son of Lt Colonel ARCHER, RAMC, & Mrs ARCHER, 95, Walton Road, Aylesbury. They were married on 12 July 1917 at St Andrew's Church in Plymouth.
