From the Archives: An ephemeral history of Trinity College School

The John D. Burns Archives at Trinity College School, 55 Deblaquire Street North, Port Hope, Ontario, ON L1A 4K7, Canada 43.9616, -78.2863 is a quiet, little area located on the third floor of the W.A. Johnson Classroom Block in what would have been the chemistry lab in the 1930s. Behind the classroom door of room 301, visitors step into a room filled with pieces of our past, including many treasures or curiosities. A sampling of ephemera and documents housed in the archives tells an interesting historical story of popular Trinity College School lore.

1883-1885: Autograph Book

Autograph books were used by students from the late 19th century until as late as the 1980s to collect notes and signatures. For students, these acted as mementos or keepsakes. One autograph book in our collection contains signatures dated from 1882 to 1885, as well as sketches. On first glance the inside cover contains a keepsake of Louis Riel's signature, pasted on the page. Below the signature is a note written in purple pencil crayon, describing Riel [Page 8] as leader of the rebellion and murderer of John Scott, Loyalist, hanged on Tuesday, November 17th 1885.

Upon looking more carefully at this delicate piece of history, we can see that it belonged to a student and, among other things, it details his friendships while at Trinity College School. Laurence Hill Grahame attended the School from 1883 to 1885; he is number 735 in the School Register. Inside the book are passages and signatures from the following Old Boys:

  • William H. Smith, 1883, Owen Sound, Ontario
  • Charles J. Loewen, 1883, Victoria, British Columbia
  • W.H.C. Kenney, 1883, Aylmer, Quebec
  • Casey B. Morgan, 1883, San Francisco, California
  • George S. Gill, 1884
  • George C. Wilmot, 1884, Newcastle, Ontario
  • J.W. Kennedy, 1881, Toronto, Ontario
  • Samuel C. Peck, 1883, Brooklyn, New York

Grahame was from a prominent Toronto family and would go on to an interesting career path which included a close friendship with Theodore Roosevelt, who appointed him secretary-treasurer of the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis and later commissioner of the interior in the Puerto Rican government. His son, the prominent author Gordon Hill Grahame, attended Trinity College School from 1902-1904.
