Brief overview:

Laurence (69), and his wife Monica Mustoe (73), an elderly couple were attacked, tied up in separate rooms and viciously stabbed by attackers whom they might have let into their home. Laurence and Monica Mustoe, parents of three, grandparents of four and great-grandparents of two, were brutally murdered by attackers who entered their suburban house in Meredale, Johannesburg, on Wednesday. Hours after the event, a cheerful signboard at the front door proclaiming "A lovely lady and a handsome gentleman live here" contrasted starkly with bloodstains, grey fingerprint dust and other signs of extreme violence. Inside, the family home was proudly decorated with family photos and other precious mementoes. According to the couple's son Peter, his youngest sister Anne tried to call her parents on their landline during the afternoon, but got an engaged signal. She called back later, and when the phone was again engaged, she called her father on his cellphone. When that too was engaged, she tried to call her mother on her cellphone. A man answered and told her to "leave us alone". The anxious woman called Crime Stop Security. Security guard Moses Rammutla (29), was sent out and arrived within minutes of the call being logged. "The way the daughter was talking, I knew something was wrong. When I got here, I jumped the wall. "The front door was closed, but it wasn't locked, so I went inside. There were some things lying on the floor, but there was nobody there, so I walked through," said Rammutla. Still visibly shaken, the traumatised guard said the scenes he encountered in the two spare bedrooms were the worst he had come across in his seven years of security work and left him incapable of describing what he saw. Laurence Mustoe, had been tied to a chair in the study, and had been stabbed many times. Monica was found in a spare bedroom, where she too had been tied up and stabbed. The murderers escaped with several household items in the couple's white Toyota Tazz, registration MNB158GP. Peter Mustoe described his parents as "the most generous people who ever walked the earth. They would have given the shirts off their backs to anyone in need." He said the entire family were devastated by what had happened, and had been left asking : Why them?
