About Lawrence Washington, 1st of Sulgrave

Lawrence married Anne Aimee Pargiter (b. 1504, d. 07 Oct 1564) in 1538 in Sulgrave, England. Anne was the daughter of Robert Pargiter and Anne Knight and the widow of Thomson of Greatworth.

Lawrence Washington was a wealthy wool merchant and became Mayor of Northampton. It was Lawrence who first settled at Sulgrave with his second wife Aimee, the third daughter of Robert Pargiter of Greatworth, near Sulgrave. Lawrence's former wife, Elizabeth, had died childless. Lawrence purchased Sulgrave from King Henry VIII in 1539.

He built of Sulgrave Manor which on Sulgrave Manor Road, Sulgrave, Nr. Banbury, Osfordshire, UK (England).

He was Mayor of Northampton in 1532 and 1545. He built Sulgrave Manor, Northants and

was tenant in right of his wife. By grant of HENRY VIII, on 10 March 1539, he received outright ownership of Sulgrave Manor, at the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries. He was seized of "Sulgrave" at that time. It was formerly the property of the Priory of Saint Andrew, in Northhampton."

This is primarily the family of Sulgrave Manor. In the fourteenth century, the main branch of the Washington familymoved to Westmorland, then to Lancashire, Warwickshire and Northamptonshire. In the 16th century a group split off of the Northampton family and moved to Ireland. Acquired the Manor of Sulgrave March 10, 1539 with his second wife Aimee Pargiter. The Manorhouse was completed about 1560.

Lawrence and Amy Partiger Washington were the parents of 4 sons and 7 daughters. Lawrence and Amy are buried in the 14th century churchyard of St. James the Less in Sulgrave, Northampshire, England.
