About Lejzer Elazar Lipszyc Lipschutz

Stones of Remembrance (Avnei Zikaron), researched and compiled by Dr. Neil Rosenstein and R. Dov Weber, based on the manuscript Avnei Zikaron by Samuel Zvi Weltsman of Kalisz (New York, 1999):

Zdunska Wola 278) Eleasar Lipschitz aus Piotrkow Sonntag 12 Aw 597 (1837).

The inscription calls him "gevir"

Attached is an image of the tombstone inscription as recorded by Weltsman.

Two genealogy blogs quote Daniel Wagner, an expert on the Jews of Zdunska Wola and their cemetery, as having written, "The oldest gravestone is that of Elazar LIPSZYC, who died in 1837. " The web page on which he reportedly wrote that is no longer available.

The Jewish Death record Zdunska Wola Nr.10/1837 for LIPSZYC Lajzer does not name any members of his family.

In the introduction to גופי הלכות by אברהם צבי הירש בן אלעזר (Lodz, 1911),

Mordechai Zwi HaLevi Horowicz (already deceased when the book came out) writes that his grandfather was Elazar Lipszyc and that Elazar's sister was the wife of Abraham Zwi Hirsch, author of 'B'rit Abraham'. We know from Pinchas Zelig Gliksman (Ir Lask) that she was Rywka, daughter of Jehudah Leybush Lipszyc. Elazar was a son of Jehudah Leybush and his unnamed wife, daughter of Samuel HaCohen Lasker. So Gliksman got one detail wrong when he wrote that Meszulem Horowicz was a son-in-law of Jehudah Leybush Lipszyc. The truth is that Meszulem Horowicz was son-in-law of Lazar, son of Jehudah Leybush Lipszyc.
