Kammerzienrat, Senator of the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gesellschaft from 1911 to 1933
The Rubens had been stolen by Hermann Goering, who oversaw much of the Nazi art-plunder, from the great Berlin collection assembled by Jewish banker and industrialist Leopold Koppel. Private life
Leopold Koppel was married and had several sons and daughters. His wife Helene Halberstam was buried in the early 1920s in the Jewish Cemetery Weissensee. His son Albert Leopold Koppel ( * 1889) became a partner in his father's bank. In his villa in the smoke Straße 22 in the Tiergarten district (purchase 1893) there was a collection of paintings by Baroque painters such as Rembrandt, Peter Paul Rubens and van Dyck. This collection was compiled on the advice of Bode.
Nazi era and death
Leopold Koppel came already at the very beginning of the Nazi regime under strong pressure. So he had to retire from the Senate of the German Banking Act in May 1933. In August 1933, Leopold Koppel died and was buried in the Park Cemetery Lichterfelde. The tomb is one of the graves honor the State of Berlin. The bank he founded Koppel & Co. disappeared about 1934, either by forced liquidation or by " linearization ". The children emigrated.
