LeRoy Franklin Youmans was born Nov 14, 1834, at Mexico, the plantation home of Capt. Nathan Johnston (II), his grandfather, in St. Peter's Parish, Beaufort District, SC, and died Dec 3, 1906 at his residence in Columbia, where he is buried in Trinity Churchyard.
He married Dec 23, 1857 Mary E. Tillinghast of Gillisonville, and they lived at Stoney Run Plantation (a wedding gift from his father) in St. Luke's Parish, later in Edgefield and after 1872 in Columbia. He was a graduate of the South Carolina College and was a distinguished lawyer.
LeRoy F Youmans was a veteran of the Civil War in which he served as 1st Lieutenant, Company F, 3rd South Carolina Calvary, C.S.A., a company of mounted riflemen organized in Gillisonville, and although elected and re-elected to a seat in the House of Representatives in 1862 and 1864 "he never availed himself of the exemption from military service".
In 1885 Youmans was appointed United States Attorney by President Cleveland, and later, by appointment, sat on the Circuit and Supreme Benches of South Carolina. In 1905, he again became Attorney-General and was the holder of that office at the time of his death.
