Levi ibn Habib, Judío Rabino principal de Jerusalén

Levi ibn Habib (Zamora, Castille (Spain) c. 1480 – Jerusalem, Southern Syria c. 1545) was Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem from 1525 until his death.

Under King Manuel of Portugal, and when about seventeen, he was compelled to submit to baptism, but at the first opportunity fled to Salonica, where he could follow the dictates of his conscience in safety. In 1523 he went to Jerusalem, but in a short time returned to Salonica. In 1525 he settled permanently in Jerusalem, where his learning won him the position of chief rabbi. There he met Jacob Berab, with whom he often came into conflict on questions of rabbinical law. A serious quarrel broke out between these two rabbis when Berab, becoming chief rabbi of Safed, reintroduced the ancient practice of the ordination of rabbis. They carried on a bitter and envenomed controversy for some time, in the course of which Berab referred to Ibn Habib's adoption of Christianity. The latter frankly admitted the fact, but pointed out that at the time he was a mere youth, that his involuntary profession of Christianity lasted hardly a year, and that he took the first opportunity to escape and rejoin the religion of his fathers. This controversy was chiefly responsible for the fact that the practice of ordination ceased again soon after Berab's death.

רבי לוי בן חביב (ה'ר"ם, 1480 לערך - ה'ש"א, 1541 לערך) המכונה גם בשם הרלב"ח או מהרלב"ח היה ראש חכמי ומנהיגי ירושלים המתפתחת במהלך עלייתם של מגורשי ספרד ופורטוגל לארץ

רבי לוי נולד בעיר זאמורה שבספרד לאביו ר' יעקב בן חביב גם הוא מגדולי חכמי ישראל בדורו

במהלך גירוש ספרד נמלטה משפחתו לפורטוגל בה שהו עד גזירת הגירוש בפורטוגל בשנת ה'רנ"ח (1498), אז עברה משפחתו לסלוניקי

בזמן שהותו בפורטוגל למד אצל ר' יצחק אבוהב וכאשר היה בסאלוניקי למד מאביו ומחכמי העיר. בסאלוניקי סיים רבי לוי את הדפסת חיבורו המפורסם של אביו העין יעקב על אגדות התלמוד

בשנת ה'רע"ג (1513) כבר התיישב הרלב"ח בירושלים לזמן קצר אולם בהמשך חזר לסאלוניקי וכן שהה בדמשק ובחאלב

בשנת ה'רפ"ה (1525) הגיע לצפת ולאחר תקופה קצרה שם עלה לירושלים ובמהרה מונה לעמוד בראש הקהילה

הרלב"ח היה בר פלוגתא לר' יעקב בירב, ויכוחם בנושא חידוש הסמיכה באותה תקופה מפורסם מאוד וידוע בשם פולמוס הסמיכה הראשון

מכתביו - ספר שאלות ותשובות, פירוש להלכות קידוש החודש במשנה תורה לרמב"ם ואוסף דרשות. ע"פ תשובותיו נראה שעסק גם בחכמת הקבלה וכן באסטרונומיה וגאומטריה

תלמידיו - ר' יששכר בן מרדכי אבן סוסאן מנהיג קהילת המערבים בצפת, ו-ר' משה קאשטרו אשר המשיך אחר רלב"ח בהנהגת הקהילה היהודית בירושלים, הרב יעקב קאשטרו רבה של מצרים

לאחר פטירתו כנראה בשנת 1541, ירד מעמדה של ירושלים והחל להתמעט בה היישוב היהודי עד כדי כך שנאלצו לפנות בענייני דין ומשפט לבית הדין היושב בצפת
