Lewis Abraham Nathan

Lewis was born in 1828 in London, England.

He married Maria Moses in January 1853 in the New Synagogue in London when he was aged 25. His marriage certificate lists his occupation as a Cigar Maker and his address as 13 Goulston Street Whitechapel London.

Lewis and Maria emmigrated to Australia in 1853/54.

Lewis is listed as a 'Dealer' in the Sands Street Directories and the following addresses were listed:-

1867 - 51 Goulburn Street Sydney

1871- 32 Hill Street Sydney. (residence)

1871 - 44 Wexford Street Sydney

1877 - 41 Wexford Street Sydney

1878 - 355 Elizabeth Street Sydney

1882- 5 Dowling Street Sydney

1884 - 165 Macquarie Street Sydney

1885 - 165 Macquarie Street Sydney

1887 - 99 Gipps Street Sydney

The oral history suggesting that Lewis and Maria came out to Australia to be caretakers of the Sydney Synagogue is a bit doubtful if Lewis is listed as a dealer in the Sands Directories during this time.

Lewis passed away in December 1890 at 28 Marshall Street Sydney and is buried at the Jewish Cemetery at Rookwood. The informant was Samuel Nathan, son, of 28 Bennett Street Sydney NSW.
