Abraham (George) Nathan

Abraham was born on the 16th May 1858 at 355 Elizabeth Street Sydney. One of the six addresses listed in the Sands Directories as home or business address of his parents Lewis and Maria Nathan, who are listed as 'dealers'.

Abraham was also listed as a 'deale'r in the Sands Directories and the first recorded was at Coonabarrabran NSW in 1879 where he possibily met his wife Elizabeth Esther Hopley in the same year. Abraham and Elizabeth married on the 4th August 1879 at Newtown, Sydney NSW. However, the marriage states his usual residence is in Coonabarabran NSW.

Father's occupations on the marriage certificate were Lewis Nathan - Dealer and Walter Hopley - Miner.

In 1884 they moved to 50 Wexford Street, Sydney, NSW. This street was a Jewish guetto which was later condemned and the street no longer exists. The living conditions must have been very bad. See Henry Isaac's notes.

In 1885 they moved to 165 Macquarie Street, Sydney, NSW and in 1888 they moved to 5 Little Smith Street, Sydney NSW.

I assume Abraham operated several small businesses during this period.

Abraham passed away on 1st December 1928 and is buried at the Jewish Cemetery at Rookwood Sydney NSW.
