Residence Westmoreland County VA; Enlisted on 5/16/1861 for 12 months' service, he was mustered into Company C "Montross Guards" of Westmoreland County, 47th Virginia Infantry as a Private. On 8/7/1861 he applied for transfer into cavalry. On 8/19/1861 he was transferred into Captain Richard L.T. Beale's Company, Virginia Cavalry at Brooke's Station, Stafford County. (This company subsequently became Company C, 9th Virginia Cavalry.) Reenlisted 3/25/1862 at St. Paul's Church, King George County, for 2 years' service; paid $50 Reenlistment Bounty. Promoted to 3rd Sergeant 12/9/1862. POW 2/1/1863 Westmoreland Court House, VA.; listed 2/4/1862 on Parole of Prisoners of War by Army of Potomac; confined 2/6/1863 Old Capitol Prison, Washington, DC.; arrived at City Point, VA. on 3/29/1863 for exchange. Horse Shot In Action 5/2/1863 near Trevellian's Station, Louisa County, VA.; reimbursed $500. Listed as Sergeant starting on July & Aug 1863 Roll. Elected [2nd] 2nd Lieutenant on 11/18/1863. Signing papers 8/1864 as Lieutenant, Commanding. Wounded by gunshot, with fracture of radius bone, in right arm 10/27/1864 at Boydton Plank Road; admitted 10/29/1864 into General Hospital #4, Richmond; given 60-day Medical Furlough home (Oak Grove) on 11/7/1864. Oath Allegiance 4/28/1865 Ashland, VA.

Postwar he was again living in Oak Grove, VA. His pistol is displayed at the Westmoreland Historical Society.

The 9th Cavalry Regiment was formed in January, 1862, using the 1st Battalion Virginia Cavalry as its nucleus. Its companies were from the counties of Stafford, Caroline, Westmoreland, Lancaster, Essex, Spotsylvania, Lunenburg, King William, King George, and Richmond. It fought in the Seven Days' Battles, the conflicts at Gainesville, Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Dumfries, Rapidan Station, Brandy Station, Upperville, Hanover, Gettysburg, Williamsport, Funkstown, Culpeper Court House, Bristoe, Mine Run, The Wilderness, and Todd's Tavern.
