This Samuel Backus was born 6 January 1693 at Norwich; and his wife was born 6 April 1698 and was the eldest daughter of John Tracy the second, and Elizabeth Leffingwell, of Norwich. Samuel Backus was the second son of Joseph Backus of Norwich; and his mother was Elizabeth Huntington, a daughter of Deacon Simon Huntington the first, of Norwich. [2]

Samuel was born on Jan 6 1693 in Norwich, Connecticut. He died on Nov 24 1740 in Norwich, Connecticut. Samuel Backus was a "quiet, enterprising farmer, prosperous in his own business, but having little to do with public affairs." He moved upriver from Norwich to Yantic where he established a grist mill, a saw mill, and the iron works that were to be notable in the Revolution. He served as lieutenant in the training band and as deputy to the General Court in 1738, 1739, and 1740.

He died in the great measles epidemic of 1740 in which his wife was also taken seriously ill. He left an estate of 5300 pounds, a very large sum for those days. In the estate were a negro slave named Lois, valued at 120 pounds, and Kate, an Indian apprentice, valued at twelve pounds. He was married to Elizabeth Tracy on Jan 18 1715/16 in probably Norwich, Connecticut.[3]
