Samuel Backus, Jr., oldest child of Samuel and Elizabeth Tracey Backus, born Jan 11, 1716/7, 1st married, December 14, 1743, Phebe Calkins (bom June 27, 1721, daughter of Hugh and Phebe (Abell) Calkins). She died the 1st of March 1755 after having five known children and he 2nd married, July 2, 1755, Elizabeth Wedge (born January 1, 1730, daughter of Joshua and Mary (Welch) Wedge, of Norwich).

Samuel died intestate the 2nd of October 1778, aged sixty-one. The distribution of his estate gives the names of his children: Samuel, appointed administrator, later served in the Revolutionary War and died unmarried, Phebe Spalding (wife of Jonathan Spalding), Elizabeth and Hannah (both died unmarried). His
younger children, by his second wife who outlived him, were Anne (later married to Samuel Raymond) and Rufus (who married Clarissa Throop).
