Obituary:

  • ORFORD, STEPHEN MEWBURN, 2nd Lieut., 11th (Service) Battalion. The King’s Royal Rifle Corps,
  • son of the Rev. Canon Horace William Orford, M.A., Rector of Ficksburg, Orange Free State, South Africa, and Canon of Bloemfontein, by his wife, Annie Elizabeth, daughter of W. Armistead;
  • born Bradden, county Northampton, 5 Dec. 1888;
  • educated St. Andrew’s College, Bloemfontein, and Cape University;
  • was a Clerk in the Treasury Department, Union Government of South Africa;
  • served as a Private in “Enslin’s Horse” in the German South African Campaign
  • and in the Rebellion in the Orange Free State;
  • volunteered for foreign service, and was gazetted 2nd Lieut. The Kings Royal Rifle Corps 21 Oct. 1915;
  • served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from May, 1916,
  • and was killed in action at Ypres 25 June following. Buried at Vlamertinghe.
  • His Commanding Officer wrote:
  • I had absolute confidence in him: he was a most brave and conscientious soldier, a charming personality, full of energy and a fine example to his men,
  • I cannot speak too highly of him, “ and another officer:
  • “I think he was the very coolest and bravest soul I’ve met out here,
  • and with us he was the most wonderfully cheerful influence.
  • Since he has been with us we’ve always been cheery and happy in the mess.” Unm.
