About Lieutenant Frederick Nicholson

Lieutenant Frederick Nicolson, 11th Batter, 7th Brigade, Royal Artillery, died in battle on the 29th of March 1879 at Kambala, South Africa. The Battle of Kambala was part of the Anglo-Zulu War. He died of his wounds and was 30 at the time of his death. There is a memorial at St Paul's, London dedicated to Lieut. Nicholson and his mother Clementia.

The albumen print photograph above was in the collection of Queen Victoria and remains in the Royal Collection. It was taken by an unknown photographer circa 1878 - 79.
