Lieutenant - General Robert Douglas

Biographical Summary

"(108) Robert Douglas, fifth son of No. 102. He was born 5th May 1727, and is said to have been the nineteenth child of his parents. He died at Zirikzee, Holland, 30th December 1809. He was a General in the Dutch army, and married, 24th June 1754, Helen, daughter of Lieutenant-General de Brauw. They had issue : —

• Archibald (No. 109).
• Daniel Henry Douglas, born 1761 ; died infancy.
• George Daniel Douglas, born 1763 ; died infancy.
• Cornelius Stavenisse Douglas, born 1768 ; died infancy.
• Mary Douglas, born December 1755; died 1793. Married 1781 Caspar, Baron van Breugel. Her son assumed the name and Arms of Douglas.

ARMS of van Breugel Douglas. — Per pale, Dexter, van Breugel as in plate. Sinister, Douglas of Friarsshaw. CRESTS : Dexter, On a coronet a sitting hound proper, gorged with a coronet or, between two wings, one argent and the other gules ; Sinister, Douglas, as before. MOTTOES : Above the Douglas Crest, "Do or die," and beneath the shield, " In trinitate fortitudo " ( Wapenboek van den Nederlandschen Adel" by J. B. Rietstap). [Plate III., fig. 12.]"
