About Lillian Marion Rosenberg

Marion “Uncle Billy” & Lillian Loeb “Jinksie” Rosenberg

Marion Lester was born Oct. 31, 1889, the third child of Abe and Rebecca Rosenberg. He died May 27, 1984 in Atlanta, Georgia. Lillian Loeb, the fourth and youngest child of Marcus & Lena Loeb was born Oct 31, 1892 in Palatka Florida. She died Sept. 27, 1968 in Atlanta Ga.

Lillian and her sister Rosalie married Rosenberg brothers: Rosalie married Herbert and Lillian married Marion (Billy). Marion and Lillian’s wedding was Sept. 3, 1913. They never had children.

Marion was known in the family as “Billy”. Mom’s 1st cousin Jacob Haas gave him the nickname Billy because every time Marion came to visit he would ask Jacob what he wanted, and Jacob would tell him a Billy Goat. He had an easygoing personality, was likable and laughed easily, but it seems that Lillian was of an opposite disposition. Lillian was known as “Jinksie” having been nicknamed that by Lena Meyer Loeb’s cousin Abe Baer (aka BB). BB was inspired to name Lillian “Jinksie” after a cartoon of a stubborn mule. A family member related the following: “Uncle Billy had a really difficult and mean wife who was Rosalie Loeb Rosenberg’s sister, Lillian Loeb Rosenberg (“Jinksie”), who always fought with him and her 3 sisters. She was perhaps jealous of Honey” (her sister and wife of Dr. Pops).

Jinksie would argue, yell and scream frequently with her mother. Family considered her mean. Some considered her “a little crazy”. She was mean to all of her sisters and spoke negatively of her nieces and nephews. It seems that she was generally mean and angry, though one person, her niece Frances Lebensburger, reported that Jinksie had a good sense of humor.

Billy worked for his father-in-law, Pops Loeb, serving as Treasurer of the Marcus Loeb, Co. He enjoyed a close relationship with his father-in-law, returning home with him during the day for lunch. Marion and Lillian lived with together with Momps (Lena Mayer) Loeb for many years until Momps became too elderly to maintain a home. Momps then moved in with her oldest daughter, Viola and Billy and Jinksie took a apartment near sisters Rosalie, Viola and Helen, who all lived in the same neighborhood.

Letter from Aunt Jinksie to Carol on her 15th Birthday

My Dear Carol, Well, here is my loving wishes for a very happy birthday with many more to come. “Billy” is mailing you by this afternoon a check, which we hope you will find some thing that will bring you pleasure to use it for. I know you are having a “swell” time. , and I surely am glad you are. “Momps” took Leman, Gloria, Connie, and Richard on a picnic to-day. Your mother went too. Tonight is Claire Bernard’s birthday dance which you were invited to. It is at Wieca. “Herby” had a grand time at the Picnic in Montgomery. His girl is “sweller” than ever. “Bill” and I spent a nice Fourth of July. We had dinner at the Winecoffs. “Momps” was invited to the Standard Club with “Yoli” and Arthur. After dinner we went out to Nat’s and Jeanetta’s and played cards. Kiss all the folks for me and let some good sport give you fifteen kisses for me. Loads of love to you, the birthday girl. Devotedly “Jinksie” Wednesday
