Lindley Hoag Whitaker died Dec 5 1894 at his home east of town in Ludden North Dakota last Sunday morning from complication of diseases of which inflammatory rheumatism was one.
The deceased was in his 53th year and a native of Maine. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic and left a war record of which any veteran might be proud.
Before leaving Maine Mr. Whitaker joined the Free Masons and upon learning of the death of one of the order the members of the different lodges near here united in conducting the last services over one of their number. The Heclar Lodge conducted the funeral at the special request of the bereaved wife and family and the beautiful and impressive ceremony of that order’s burial service was transformed into the sublime by it’s eloquent and impressive delivery by F.W. Smith of Hecla, chaplain of that lodge, assisted by the master Mr. Wagner.
Mr. Whitaker was a man of singular uprightness of character who deserved the trust and confidence his friends reposed in him.
The funeral was held Tuesday in the M. E. church and was very largely attended and much sympathy was expressed for the wife and two children left without the protecting care of their loved one.
