Life Sketch

Engaged in Agriculture.

"William West and his son Littleberry arrived at the White Colony of Bogue Chitto (Mississippi) and with permission, established a claim on the west side of the Bogue Chitto river, five miles below the "demarcation" or dividing line between the Mississippi Territory and Louisiana about 3/30/1798. Robert Carter also came in the early months of 1799 and staked out a claim to a land tract on the west side of the Bogue Chitto not far from where the river flowed into the Pearl.

William West was there about a year when Indians attacked and West retreated east. Claim jumpers (allegedly John Wooten) subsequently grabbed the land. There exists a copy of the letter that William's son Littleberry, wrote on his behalf, trying to get the land back. [L&D-223]

William went back to Louisiana and settled on St. Catherine Creek, where he is listed on the census of 25 May 1792 with son, Littleberry.

William left no will. Items on inventory at his death were: 1 tract of land valued at $200, oxen, pots, Dutch oven, plows, beds, chair, bee gum, pewter basin, pewter plates, tin basin, 1 earthen mug, 1 piggin, saddle, bridle, steer hyde, calf hyde, etc.

The East Pearl River forms the easternmost border of lower Louisiana and Mississippi (on the Gulf Coast). The Bogue Chitto River flows from NW past Franklin Louisiana to meet the Pearl near Bush, Louisiana. Best estimate is that the William West land was in the area of Bush, Louisiana."

After reviewing the map, it looks like it was Littleberry who owned land here rather than Anthony. However, there is an Anthony whose last name is marred by blotches that could be Anthony West.

GEDCOM Note

There is confusion and disagreement on how many wives Littleberry had and who the children were from each wife. Best estimates: Tabitha is the mother of of Gadi West amd the earliest children based on birthdates and the strong tendency to name daughters Tabitha. Some sources will show a different (unnamed) wife for the early 1800s because of age column discrepancy for what might be Tabitha on the 1820 census. There is a record of the marriage to Eleanor Carter Langton in 1826 and some attribute additional children to this marriage. I've seen no contemporaneous evidence, however, that these aren't step-children or grand-children. BIOGRAPHY: What is clear is that Littleberry was a farmer in the Louisiana area and we have many court records for his land activities. Also see http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/la/military/war1812/index/la18... for a list of Louisiana veterans of the War of 1812. Names there include Berry West, Cato West, and Gadi West.
