Notes: NAME: Lowas Conklin (12 Jan 1852 Canada

Note: Initial source: A family group sheet of John Wiswall and Lois Worsley compiled by Barbara (Jones) Edward, 146 N. Fowler, Ogden, Utah, 84404. It has no sources and some of it may have been research of her mother, Maxine (Johnson) Jones, (now deceased) who is a gr-gr-daughter of Mary Lois (Van Leuven) Clifford. The names of children and their birthdates were found by Barbara in records of Dedham, Norfolk, Massachusetts and Marlborough, Cheshire, New Hampshire. Clifton Ward records, Patriarchal Blessings Index and Endowment House sealing records of the LDS Church, all in the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, show the parents of Lucinda Harvey to be Luther Harvey and Lois Wiswall. The Temple Records give her birthdate and place. Other sources searched were "History of Marlborough, Cheshire, New Hampshire" by C. A. Bemis, 1881 (FHL 974.29/M1 H2b, film 599189 it 2 or 1004505), pp 701-702; "The Wiswall Desc of Leofwine the Saxon" by J. M. Wiswall, c1978 (FHL 929.273 W769w); both gave the names of her parents. The earliest LDS proxy baptism done for Lois Wiswall was in the Logan Temple 26 Aug 1884, done by a step-daughter, Sarah Conklin Honor Snyder (177837 pg 336). It was done again (recorded as Lois Liswell) 5 May 1885 Logan by Matilda Ann V. Sperry, gr-daughter (177839 pg 454), and again in Salt Lake 23 Oct 1894 by Sarah Snyder. This last record was found by Barbara Edward and included Thomas Conklin and Fanny Lyon, showing Sarah as their daughter. Proxy endowment was done for Lois Wiswall 7 May 1885 Logan, also by gr-daughter Matilda (177956 pg 16), and again 1 Nov 1894 Slake, by step-daughter Sarah Snyder (184085 pg 429). Proxy sealing to parents was done by Barbara Edward. The Salt Lake temple records found by Barbara Edward led her to the discovery of Lois' second marriage to Thomas Conklin. The 1851 census of Storrington, Frontenac, Ontario, Canada, pg 7 (film 349206), shows Thomas and Lois (spelled Lowas) with a Thomas, 15, born Loughborough. The 18 61 census (971.371 x2s) shows Thomas and Lois living there with a son Thomas, 24, born in Canada, his wife, Mary, 24, and a daughter, Lula J., 1. Lois was not in the 1819 census of Loughborough, published in "The Ontario Register" (FHL 971.5 B2og or 908001) Vol 3 pg 29, although Thomas Conklin is listed as well as some who are probably his children, but no Fanny was listed. There are nine children listed in his will (see notes for him) and census and LDS Temple records show birthdates of all but one of them. It seems that the first five were born 1806 to 1817, the next three, Mary Jane, born 1822, David, 1824, Thomas 1836. Thomas was named first in the will, probably because he received all his father's property and a charge to care for his mother. The will left to his "dearly beloved wife Lois Conklin, mother to the above Thomas Conklin, an honourable living off the place during her natural life" plus part of the house and furniture, and charged that Thomas "is neither to sell or dispose of the ... property during the life of his mother ... without her consent." This suggests to me that Thomas may be the only son, and possibly the only one of his children, by Lois. However, it is possible that Mary Jane, David and Lanson could be hers. It seems unlikely, though, since there is a 12-year gap between the birth of David and that of Thomas. Marriages of St. George Church of Kingston, Ontario, should be searched for the marriage of Thomas and Lois. 26 August 2013 by Rich Rydalch
