About Samantha Nelson

Samantha Madsen was born August 10, 1875, in Bloomington, Bear Lake County, Idaho, to Anton Peter Madsen and Elizabeth Mary Jane Nelson. She was a first cousin to my great grandmother, Dortha Roxana Madsen, since Dortha's father, Christian Madsen, was the brother of Anton Peter Madsen. In the 1900 U.S. Federal Census for Bloomington, she was listed with her parents and siblings in the census record as follows: Anton, 29, Elizabeth Mary Jane Madsen, 26, Samantha, 6, Leah D., 3, and Affalona, 1 year old. Samantha's father was working as a laborer. Anton was born in Rostrup, Aalborg, Denmark, as were his parents, Jacob and Dorothea Madsen. Elizabeth Mary Jane Nelson was born in Willow Creek, Utah, her father in Illinois, and her mother in Ohio. Elizabeth Mary Jane Nelson was the daughter of Thomas Billington Nelson and Mary Catherine Welker. Christian Madsen (Dortha's father) was married to Roxana Louisa Welker, daughter of John Welker, the brother of Mary Catherine Welker.

Samantha married Heber Christian Nelson, November 7, 1895, at the age of 20. He was the son of Soren Christian Nelson of Denmark, and Anne Josephine Evans, of Wales. In the 1900 census for Bloomington, they were listed as follows: Heber C., 28, Samantha, 25, and their daughter, Lola S., 1 year old. Heber was born in Idaho and his father in Denmark and mother in Pennsylvania. He was working as a farmer, and owned his farm free from a mortgage. By 1910, they were living in Bramwell, Canyon County, Idaho, and were listed as: Heber C., 39, Samantha, 35, Lola, 11. Heber was still working as a farmer.

By 1920, they were living on Third Pash (?) Street in Salt Lake City and were listed as: Heber C., 48, Samantha, 44, Lola S., 20. They were renting their home, and Heber was still farming. In a 1928 and a 1929 U.S. City Directory, Heber and Samantha were living at 511 C Street and Heber was working as an operator for the Valentine Bedding Company.

In 1930, they were living at 511 C Street in Salt Lake City, a home they owned valued at $4,000.00, and they had a radio in their home, which was a question the census takers asked that year. They were listed in the census as: Heber C., 57, Samantha M., 55, Lola S., 31, and Alice L. Madsen, 10, a niece. Heber and Samantha had been married for 34 years and they had only one child, Lola. Heber was working as a mattress maker and his daughter Lola as a public school teacher.

Their niece, Alice Lorraine Madsen, was born in Wyoming in 1920, the daughter of Anton Elmer Madsen and his wife Sarah Nelson Madsen. Sarah had passed away in 1921, the year after Alice was born, so that is probably why she was sent to live with her aunt and uncle, since her father had to work and care for his young family after the death of his wife. Sarah's father, David Anthony Nelson, was the brother of Heber Christian Nelson, and Sarah's husband, Anton Elmer Madsen, was the brother of Samantha Madsen Nelson, Heber's wife.

In a 1936 U.S. City Directory for Salt Lake City, Heber and Samantha were still living at 511 C Street and he was working as a filler for Stover Bedding Company. By 1940, Heber, 69, and Samantha, 65, were living alone at the 511 C Street home, which was valued at $4,200.00. They both had achieved one year of high school. Heber was working as a night watchman for a bedding company, and for the 52 weeks he worked at 42 hours per week during 1939, his income was $600.

A 1942 U.S. City Directory showed that Heber was working as a watchman for the Stover Bedding and Manufacturing Company, and they were still living at 511 C Street, and a 1948 directory indicated he was still working as a night watchman for the same company.

Heber Christian Nelson passed away on July 9, 1951, in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the LDS Hospital. His cause of death was a cerebral thrombosis. He was 80 years old, having been born February 3, 1871, in Bloomington. At the time of his death, his occupation was shown as retired farmer. Heber was buried July 12, 1951, in the Salt Lake City Cemetery, Plot: West-6-178-4-E. In a 1953 U.S. City Directory for Salt Lake City, Samantha was listed as the widow of Heber C., and was still living at 511 C Street.

Samantha Madsen Nelson passed away on June 1, 1954, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and was buried June 7, 1954, in the Salt Lake City Cemetery, Grave Location: West 6-178-5-E. Her death certificates indicates that the cause of her death at the age of 78 was from "unknown but natural causes". The informant on her death certificate was Martha Madsen Stevens of Montpelier, Idaho. No autopsy was performed. Her usual occupation was listed as housewife.

I wonder what Samantha thought of her grandson, Anthony Wilford Brimley, who became a pretty well known actor known simply as Wilford Brimley.
