Lourens de Villiers (1955 - 2021)
Brief overview:
Lourens (66), manager of the Fish Eagle Eco Camp at the Calitzdorp Dam in the Western Cape, was found tied up and murdered outside his residence on Tuesday 13th April. His family became concerned when he left the family's WhatsApp group on Sunday 11th April.
The Calitzdorp Police asked residents to come forward with any information that could help them in their investigation, especially about people who have been working there recently and also where his bakkie has been seen since Saturday (April 10th) as well as who was driving it. His blue pickup truck was later found abandoned in Matjiesvlei.
A virtual memorial service for De Villiers is planned for May 2 at 11:30 p.m. He is survived by two sisters and a brother.
Update 18/04/2021: A 30-year-old man and two young teenagers were arrested yesterday (17/04/2021) and today after an intensive investigation by detectives from the Calitzdorp Police and the Attaqua K9 unit.
"According to Sergeant Chris Serfontein, spokesperson for the Southern Cape Police, a 14-year-old youth handed himself over to the police yesterday (Saturday 17 April). He was immediately arrested.
After further investigation, several stolen items belonging to De Villiers were found yesterday at a house in Bergsig in Calitzdorp, including a music center and the keys to the bakkie. This led to the arrest of a 30-year-old man on a charge of murder and possession of stolen property.
Earlier today, a 15-year-old youth was arrested after he was also positively linked to the incident. He is also facing a charge of murder. The trio remain in custody. They will appear in the Calitzdorp Magistrate's Court on Monday (April 19) on the mentioned charges. More complaints could be added as the investigation progresses."
Update 22/04/2021: A fourth suspect has been arrested. Serg. Chris Spies, spokesperson for the police, said a 23-year-old man was arrested in Besemkop near Calitzdorp on Wednesday morning (20/04/2021) on a charge of murder.
