About Lt Col. Hugh Robert Alcock
Hugh Robert Alcock, the only son of Army Captain Michael Alcock, who was wounded in the French siege of Minorca in 1756, spent his youth in the military service of the Honorable East India Company, rising from cadet in 1763 to lieutenant colonel by the time he retired in 1784. He married at least twice, once while in Cuddalore, India in 1770 to his cousin, Philadelphia Sloper. They had two girls. Years after his return to England, he married Hannah Ekelso in 1799 and fathered three more girls and a boy, who died at the age of 17 or so, soon after following in his father's footsteps and enlisting in the East India Co. army. Hugh Robert lived to the ripe old age of 84, passing away in 1831 in Taunton, England.
HR's father was Michael Alcock, a Captain in the Right Honourable the Earl of Effingham Regiment in the Garrison of Gibraltar. The will is dated 1758. The executor and executrix are Capt. Henry Brownrigg and his wife, Mary. Further along, Mary and HR are identified as Michael Alcock's children. While I am still trying to discover the details of his career and life, I know that HR sailed to India in 1763 as a cadet and during his years of service rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel in the HEIC infantry. He resigned in 1784, returned to the UK and died in 1831. HR Alcock was married twice. His first bride was Philadelhia Sloper, and they were married in Cuddalore, India, in 1770. The following year, HR Alcock had a daughter, Marta, but the mother is listed as unknown in the records. I have no information about what became of her or Philadelphia. His second wife was Hanna Ekelso. According to LDS microfilms, HR Alcock married Hannah on 16 October 1799 in the Parish Church of Essendon, Hertfordshire, England. Hannah was born March 13, 1778 in Essendon, to Timothy and Sarah Ekelso. Hannah and HR Alcock had a daughter, Harriet Alcock, who married a William Eastted. LDS films show the daughter of Harriet and William Eastted, Elizabeth Emma Eastted, was born 7 July 1836, and her Christening took place 31 July 1836 at Old Church, Saint Pancras in London. LDS films also confirm that Elizabeth Emma Eastted (HR Alcock’s granddaughter) was married in the same church on June 24, 1857 to Peruvian diplomat Federico Pezet y Tirado. Federico was the only child of General Juan Antonio Pezet Rodriguez Piedra who was president of Peru from 1863-65 and whose father, Dr. Jose Pezet, was one of Peru's independence leaders and founding fathers. Elizabeth and Federico eventually settled in Lima, and had seven children, among them my great-grandfather, Carlos Pezet Eastted.
