Married Matilda in 1661. He was one of Accomack County's leading men. He had thousands of acres of land. He was a shipbuilder and carpenter, a justice of the court, high sheriff of the county, and held various military ranks to Colonel. At one time he owned part of Tangier Island. In 1650, Sir William Berkeley granted him 1600 acres for transportation by his father Anthony of 32 persons into the colony from England (a retroactive "sweetheart deal").
He also maintained a simultaneous second family with one Frances Chambers.
His will was probated 8-3-1703. When typed, double spaced, the will covers 17 pages.
Do not confuse him with Col. John West of New Kent County, VA.
No he does NOT belong to the de la Warr family.
