About Lt. Colonel William Warren Neely
William W. Neely, Lt. Col. U.S. Army, Artillery (Ret.) passed away in Venice, Fla., on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007, three years after a debilitating stroke. Born in Tucson, Ariz., in 1919, he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, class of 1941, where he met his wife, Anne. He was commissioned in the U.S. Army, Coast Artillery, and, after MIT and Harvard electronics training, helped establish radar protection of the U.S. Atlantic coast during the early years of World War II. Later in the war he served in New Guinea and the Philippines on General MacArthur's staff and was promoted to Major. During Korean War combat he commanded two field artillery battalions of the 1st Cavalry Division and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. After Korea he gained an additional degree (Univ. of Alabama, Electrical Engineering) and had many other interesting Army assignments, including command of a nuclear-armed rocket battalion in Germany, before retiring in 1963. He then lived in Arlington, Va., working on computerizing NASA data until he retired in 1972 to Sarasota, Fla. He was a member of the Manasota Track Club and an avid runner into his 70s, when he took up competitive swimming.
He and Anne, who died of MS in 1995, are survived by a son, William W. Jr. of Vienna, Va.; a daughter, Leslie Bollinger of Gainesville, Fla.; their children's spouses; a grandson, Craig Neely; as well as three of Anne's siblings and their families. In 1996 he married again and moved to Venice, Fla., and is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of New Philadelphia, Ohio, and her family. Lt. Col. Neely will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia alongside Anne. Arrangements for a burial service at Arlington National will be announced later.
