George was a Civil War Soldier. He enlisted as a Lieutenant 2nd Class on 30 May 1861, Commission in CO C, 1st Infantry Regiment, GA. Promoted to Full Lieutenant, 1st Class on 15 July 1861, (Estimated day of Promo)

Resigned Company C, 1st Infantry Regiment, GA on 15 September 1861.

He claimed his Residence as Chatham Co., GA.

From the Herringshaw's Encyclopedia of American Biography of the Nineteenth Century, page 652, he was a lawyer, author, was born Feb. 9, 1835, in Savannah, Ga. From 1872–74 he served in the Georgia legislature; and was United States district judge for the southern district of Georgia.

He is buried in the Mercer and Herndon Plot, behind the Dulany & Hendrix Plot in Bonaventure Cemetery, Chatham County, GA.

George Anderson Mercer (1835-1907) was a Confederate officer and lawyer of Savannah, Ga. Mercer kept his diary intermittently during his time as a student in Savannah, Ga., and New Haven, Conn., at Princeton University, and at the University of Virginia, where he studied law. Included are entries relating to hunting and observations of birds; accounts of his Confederate military experiences in Savannah, 1861-1864, the Atlanta Campaign, 1864, service with Mercer's and Wright's division in Georgia and South Carolina, his capture in Macon, Ga., and return from prison to Savannah, 1864-1865; and his postwar work, social life, family affairs, reading and study, and reactions to current events and ideas.
