notes

John was the owner of a large tract of land in Haverhill and a large part of Lawrence, Massachusetts. No record has ever been found of the conveyance of this land away. His children were very young at the time of his death and his estate was not settled for twenty-five years. It is thought that a knowledge of his owning this land was not obtained until 1860. In 1860 Benjamin Franklin Buttler began looking into the land ownership issue, but the Civil War broke out and the investigations came to an end. 18
