In the Name of God Amen (10 Oct 1817; P 10 Nov 1817; page 18) I John Gregg Senior of Fairfield District in the State of South Carolina (Blacksmith) do make and ordain this as my last Will and Testament. That is to say. In the first place I give and bequeath unto the Lawful children of my son, William Grigg a Tract of Land containing one hundred acres more or lefs, lyeing in Fairfield District the begining the boundary line on Joseph Clouds line and runing down Sawney's creek (the creek being the line) to a poplar corner. then runing Southwardly to a pine corner on Bee Fork, as the line is blazed to Joseph Clouds line & to the begining corner, for the sole use benefit & behoof of the children as aforesaid of the said William Grigg that are now or may hereafter be born to him in wedlock, share and share alike. Secondly. the land I have deeded to my son John Grigg I wish him to have agreeable to the Deed. Thirdly, the Lands I have deeded to Shadrack Reynolds, I wish him to have agreeable to the Deed. Forthly I give and bequeath unto my son Charles Grigg a Tract of Land containing one hundred acres more or lefs, the boundary line of which begins at a spanish Oak corner on Horsepen branch, and runing up said Horsepen branch (the branch being the line) to the mouth of Beauty's Branch to a poplar corner, then up Beauty branch as the line directs to a pine station on the back line, the along the back line to the pine corner that will be mentioned in the description of the lands given hereafter in this will, to Minor Grigg--Fifthly I give and bequeath unto Monor Grigg, son of my daughter Elizabeth Head the plantation and tract of land on which I at present reside, the boundary begining on the black Gum corner (John Grigg Juniors corner) from thence Southwardly to a post oak corner on long branch (the said long branch to be the line) up to Horsepen branch then up Horsepen branch to a spanish Oak corner; from thence Northwardly as the line will shew to a pine corner on the back line, then along the back line then along my line to the black Gum corner in before mentioned. It is my will and desire that my Daughter Elizabeth Head be permitted to reside on the lands Given to her son, Minor Grigg during her life or pleasure--Sixthly. I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Elizabeth Head my ay Colt two years old next spring, two cows and calves, a good Feather bed and furniture, all my Household and kitchen furniture, and all my plantation tools for the use and benefit of her three youngest children to be used by her for their benefit and her support as also all the Geese & poultry of every description--Seventhly I allso will and desire that all the rest and residue of my Estate not mentioned in this will (Except the crop that is now on the plantation which is to be kept for the use of the plantation on which I now reside) be sold to the highest bidder on a credit of one year or more at the discrefsion of my Executors hereafter named and the proceeds equally divided between all my children share and share alike. Finally I nominate and appoint my son John Grigg Junr and my sons in Law Alexander Crumpton and William Reynolds the Executors to this my last Will and Testament. Elkins, Sebastian Ruff and Silas Ruff who being duly sworn doth make oath that they saw John Grigg did sign ? and pronounce the above and foregoing, to be and contain his last will and Testament that the said John Gregg was then of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding to the best of the knowledge and belief of the said deferient (?) that they the said Ph Elkins, Sebastian Ruff and Silas Ruff did sign their names as witness's thereto each others presence at the same time qualified Charles Gregg Ex given under my hand (Signatures). This 10th day of Nov the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventeen. WILL: In the name of God Amen, I, John Gregg of the state of South Carolina and district of Fairfield being now in perfect health of body and sound mind and memory for this I thank God Calling to mind the mortallity of my body and Knowing that it is appointed of God for all men once to die Do make and ordain this to be my last will and Testament. ?? Principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul unto the hand of almighty god that gave it And my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in unto a(?) Christian burial at the discretion of My Executors nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God. And as touching such Wordly Estate Wherewith it has pleased god to bless me in this life I give devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form. First I give and bequeath to my dearly beloved wife Judith her maintenance out of my estate during life or Widowhood. Also one bed and furniture to her and her heirs forever and not to be disposed(?) of the dwelling house against her will. Also I give to my son, William Gregg a certain piece or parcel of land known by the Boundaries here describ'd. ?? Beginning on Joseph Clouds line sawney Creek South side being the line down to a poplar Corner from thence Southwardly as the line directs to a point borna(?) upon Beefork this being the line between William and John Grigg. This piece or parcel of land to be for the use priviledge and enjoyment of the said William Gregg during his natural life but not to be at his disposal But to remain unalter'd as a fix'd inheritance for his legitimate heirs and for none other. Next to my well beloved son John Gregg I have made him a title to a certain piece or parcel of land that I intended to leave him by this my last will. Known by the boundaries here described ?? beginning at the said poplar corner moving(?) down said sawney Creek to a black gum corner then southwardly to a post oak corner from their eastwardly to long branch cornering on a sapafras(?) long branch being the line upwards to the mouth of horspen branch it being the line up to the back line. Also I give to my well beloved son Charles Gregg a certain tract or parcel of land known by these boundaries ?? beginning on said black gum corner from thence running southwardly upon Joh Gregg's line up to the said post oak corner then eastwardly to long branch then cornering on said sapafra(?) the long branch being the line up to the mouth of horspen branch then the said horspen branch being the line up to the poplar corner at the mouth of beauty's branch then eastwardly along beauty's branch upwards to a pine station on the back line. Also I desire that my negro man Stephens be apprais'd by three good men appointed by my executors and apporv'd of by those of my heirs interested in the price of said negro and I desire that one of them keep said negro as they may agree and pay to the others their respective proportion of the price of said negro according to the said valuation so made. Now those of my heirs that I leave the property of said negro Stephen to are Elizabeth Head, Judith McCants, Nancy Reynolds, Jimimah Reynolds and Penelope Reynolds five of My beloved daughters to them and their heirs forever. Also my stock of Cattle, Hogs, sheep, geese. ?? to the said before named daughters and their heirs forever. Also my household and kitchen furniture I give to my daughter Elizabeth Head except one bed and furniture already given to my wife. Also I give to Burwell the illegitimate son of my son John Gregg my blacksmith tools. Also my stock of horses I leave to be equally divided between all my children now alive. ?? William Gregg, Shadrach Gregg, John Gregg, Charles Gregg, Polly Crumpton, Elizabeth Head, Judith McCants, Nancy Reynolds, Lucretia Reynolds, Jemima Reynolds, and Penolope Reynolds to them and their heirs forever. After all my lawful debts are paid I also I give and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth Head and her son Minor Gregg a ceratin piece or parcel of Land known by those boundaries from Charles Greggs' boundary on beauty's branch eastward to the back line to them and their heirs forever. And lastly I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint my two beloved sons in law and my beloved son, ?? Alexander Crumpton, Robert McCants and Charles Gregg to be the Executors of this my last will and testament. Showeth that your Petitioner is the son and one of the Heirs of John Grigg deceased and that on the 24 day of October 1817 a will purporting to be the true Last Will and Testament of the said deceased was p.. in your office and administrator therein granted to Alexander Crumpton and others named Executors therin which will was dated on the 10 day of October 1817 but not Executed as the Law directs having but two subscribing witnesses and that your probationer is in possession of a will made by the Deceased dated on the 10th day of December 1813 duly Executed Aqually to the s... with these subscribing witness adn therefore prays that all the proceedings taken on the will first above mentioned should be looked(?) and the will now by in exhibited, established as teh true Last will and True Testament of the said John Gregg Deceased. and your petitioner will pray. On the 24th October 1817. The Last & Will and testament of this decd was presented in court, which was dated on the 10 day of October 1817 with only two subscribing witnesses, who was Qualified that the dimand singed the same in thise ...and that he was of sound and disposing mind & memory; and Alexander Crumpton, William Reynolds, and John Grigg Qualified, Executors named in the said will. On the 30th day of October 1817 Charles Grigg one of the Heirs of the above Deceased appeared and produced a will made by the Deceased on the 10th day of December 1813 dulty executed agreably to the statute, and petitioned to have the last will revoked, in as much as it was not executed as the Law directs. all those having an interest in the said Estated were cited to appear in Court on the 10th day of November 1817 to show cause (if any) why the prayer of this petition should not be granted, who appeared accordingly and upon due investigation it appeared that as the will first above mentioned had but two witnesses it could not revoke the will formerly made by the Diseased which had been duly Executed, the former procedings were therefore revoked, and the will dated on the 10 December 1813 ..in form of Law by Eli Elkin, Sebastian Ruff, and Silas Ruff and Charles Grigg Qualified as the only surviving executor named in the said will, Alexander Crumpton, only excepted ..refused to Qualify. LAND: Deed Book Y, Page 536; State of South Carolina, Fairfied District (1796) Know all men by these presents that Mrs Ann Bwoles (Bowles) of Kersham County of State aforesaid & John Ellison of Fairfield County & State aforesaid planter for and in consideration of the sum of twenty five pounds sterling mony to them paid by John Gregg of Kersham County Blacksmith have granted bargained sold and released & by these presents do grant bargain sell & release unto the said John Gregg a tract of Land containing eight hundred & forty three acres more or less granted to James Bwoles in June 1787 & conveyed to John Ellison form Anyy Bowles his wife dated 23rd February 1793 & recorded 18 March 1793 situated in Kersham County S. side Sawneys Creek Bounding on the same John Greggs & McAdams Land Together with all and singular the rights members hereditaments & appertinances thereunto belonging or in any wise incident or appertaining to have and to hold all and singular the said premises before mentioned unto the said John Gregg, hjis heirs & assigns forever. And we do bind ourselves our heirs executors & Administrators to warrant and forever defend all and singular the said premises unto the said John Gregg his heirs and assigns against ?? and our heirs, assigns and every other person Lawfully claiming or to claim the same on my part thereof. (1810) Know all men by those present that John Gregg Senr of the aforesaid District for the inconsideration of the Sum of one hundred dollars to me in hand paid by William Reynolds of the State and District have granted, Bargained, sold and released unto the said William Reynolds it begin part of a four hundred acre tract it containing one hundred acres more or less. Containing the following descriptions it lying on the north side of thorn tree Creek Bounding Benjamin Kelley's Land on the north side and Bounding on the north Eastward Side of Alexander Crumpton's Land it Corners next on a hickory next to a white oak next to a holly on the Creek next to a pine a post oak next a Black Jack ?? running its Course to the Black Line in any wise in??? or appertaining to have and to hold all and singular the said premises. Before mentioned unto the William Reynolds and his heirs and assigns forever. The Said John Greggs hereby bind myself and my heirs Executors and admninistrators to warrant and defend all and Singular the said premises unto the said William Reynold his heirs and assigns against myself my heirs and assigns from Lawfully Claiming or to Claim the Same or any part thereof as Witness our hands this 16 Day of May 1810. (1812) Know all men by these present that John Griggs Senior, Blacksmith of District aforesaid for and in consideration of the sum of fifty-six dollars paid to him by me John Griggs Junior, of the District and State aforesaid Planter have granted bargained sold and released and by those present do grant bargain sell and Release unto the said John Griggs Jr a tract or parcel of Land Containing two hundred and Eighty Acres more or Less part of this being a part of a tract containing Eight Hundred and Forty Acres originally granted to James Bowles June 1787(?) the other part of a tract originally granted to Ths (Thomas) Donnally on the ninth July 1779 and Containing one hundred acres situated in Kirshaw and Fairfield District South side of Sawney's Creek Beginning on a poplar corner at the Creek from that to a post ?? Corner Southward as the Line Directs Creeping Long Branch and running a direct course over a certain Stony Hill(?) a direct course to a pine corner on Beafork(?)Branch from thence Eastwardly as the line directs to Horse??Branch it being the Line down to Long Branch it being the line down to Yabafra's(?) Corner The Branch from thence a north west course to a post and corner from thence northwardly to a Beach Gum near at the Creek then the Creek in the Line upto(?) the poplar Corner which is the beginning Corner together with all and singular the rights members hereditaments and appurtinances there unto Belonging or in any wise Incident or Apertaining to Have and to Hold all and Singular the said premises Before mentioned unto the said John Grigg Junior his Heirs and assigns forever and Bind myself my heirs, Executors and adminstrators to warrant and forever defend all and singular the premises unto the said John Grigg Junr his Heirs and assigns against myself my heirs and assigns and Every other person or persons Lawfully Claiming or to Claim the ?? or any part thereof. Camden District is where one John Reynolds is said to have had residence. Above Henry's name is John Grigg. There is also a John Gregg (p 11). Rebekah Grigg is also living in Fairfield. 1800 US Census Fairfield, South Carolina: has listings: Edward Reynolds (p210), Shadrick Griggs (p227), Isaac Reynolds (p219), William Reynolds (p221), John Griggs (p73), Edward Reynolds (p73), Shadrach Griggs (p 72) and Nancy Reynolds (p 228) 1810 US Census has a John Reynolds living in Fairfield, South Carolina (pg 23) William Reynolds is living next to John. John Grigg, John Grigg Jr, and William Griggs, listed on same page. Another John Reynolds is listed on page 10.
