About Lt. John Shreve
DAR# A131370
When John was only 13, his father insisted that he accompany him during the Revolutionary War. One source states that the reason was that Col. Israel Shreve, the father, had recently married a younger woman. Apparently, it wasn't seemly for the young wife to live in the same house with a young man almost 14. John served alongside his father in the Second Regiment of the NJ Militia.
Col. Israel Shreve and his son John were among the others who spent a miserable winter at Valley Forge.
John wrote memoirs of his service alongside his father. Copies of this account, which also includes recollections of the family's move to Western PA., can be found on the internet.
The N. J. Militia performed efficient service in supporting the Continental line at Long Island, Trenton, Princeton, Monmouth and other important battles.
John Shreve, eldest son of Col. Israel (1739-1799) and Grace(Curtis) Shreve (1736-1771), was born 4 April 1762 in Mansfield, NJ. He wrote a short biography of his life in a letter to his niece which can be read in Memories.
His mother, Grace, died when he was 9 years old and his father remarried less than 2 years later to Mary Cokely. When John was just 14 years old, his father, at that time Lieutenant Colonel of the 2nd Regiment New Jersey Line, brought him with him into the army and he was made an ensign on July 15 1776. When his father was promoted to Colonel, John concurrently was promoted to First Ensign in his father's regiment. On July 1 1777, almost one year after joining the regiment at the age of 15 he was promoted to Lieutenant. Resigned from service 20 Mar 1781 as 1st Lieutenant. During his service he was engaged in actions such as the Battles of Short Hills and Brandywine and he wintered at Valley Forge.
Original member along with his father to the Society of the Cincinnati in the State of New Jersey which was formed in 1783. https://njcincinnati.org/john-shreve/#
