On 6 March 1725/26 he renewed covenant in the First Church of Fairfield. On 29 January 1728/29 he was mentioned as "eldest son Joseph" in the will of Ezekiel Sanford of Fairfield. In October 1745 Joseph was a Lieutenant in the Redding Company. On 7 January 1764 with four of his brothers, Joseph Sanford of Fairfield covenanted to provide support for their mother Rebecca. The will of Joseph Sanford was dated 2 November 1779, proved 11 January 1781. The will mentions all the children except Joseph and Stephen, and mentions the children of those sons. Jacobus says Joseph died in 1780; Carlton Sanford says he died in 1781.
