About Sgt. Ezekiel Sanford, II

Some older genealogies say that this was the Ezekiel Sanford who built the first stockade at Saybrook. This seems unlikely. On 27 May 1705 Ezekiel and Rebecca renewed their covenant with the Fairfield Church. Ezekiel was a Sergeant in the Fairfield Trainband, called such at the baptism of his children between 1710 and 1719 in Fairfield, Fairfield County, CT. On 14 April 1712 Sergt. Ezekiel and Thomas Sanford were granted administration on the estate of Mary Hull, widow of Theophilus Hull, of Fairfield. The will of Ezekiel Sanford is dated 29 January 1728/1729, proved 25 March 1729. It reads in part: "Touching my worldly estate -- after just debts ... -- to my beloved wife Rebecca one full third personal absolutely and one third real estate for life ... daughters Rebecca and Abigail L200 apiece ... beloved and eldest son Joseph, heirs ... L100 more than an equal part with his brothers ... Samuel L20 more ... having considered my son Zachariah in ye like amount in my life time ... beloved sons Joseph, Lemuel, Zachariah, Ezekiel, Samuel and Ephraim ... all the rest of my estate to be equally divided (some particulars about lands) ... and my pleasure is that my said son Ephraim live with his mother to be helpful to her during his non age." Zachariah and Ezekiel Sanford, Executors. John and David Down and Samuel Cooke, Witnesses. His gravestone of blue slate was still standing in 1908 and bore the inscription: "Here lies ye body of Mr. Ezekiel Sanford age 62 years dec'd March ye 2nd 1728-9." NOTE: If the age at death is correct, this would make his birth in 1666.
