Lt. Needham Whitfield

A Patriot of the American Revolution for NORTH CAROLINA. DAR Ancestor # A124686

Needham Whitfield, Sr. and his brother William Whitfield were in the battle of "Moore 's Creek Bridge." Needham was the Clerk to Col. Casswell, who commanded the Patriots. William was a private in the Light Horse; he and his brother-in-law, Daniel Williams, took prisoner General McDonald, Commander of the Tories; William and Needham Whitfield also took prisoner in the same battle Farquhard Campbell. After the war was over, Farquhard Campbell married Elizabeth "Betsy" Smith (Whitfield) widow of Alexander Smith and sister of the captors. By his wife Elizabeth "Betsy" Smith (Whitfield), Farquhard Campbell had three sons, James, William and Robert. Robert Campbell married Flora Rogers, daughter of Gen. Benjamin Rogers who fought against the British in South Carolina along with Gen Francis "Swamp Fox" Marion.

  • "Rev. Needham Whitfield, who is buried in White Hall, represented Wayne county in the North Carolina Legislature in 1783. He was for many years clerk of the Neuse Baptist Association, when Hon. Nathan Bryan, of Jones, member of Congress from the Needham district, was moderator.
  • "He was the founder of the Baptist Church at Pleasant Plains, was the father of Gen. Gains Whitfield, late or Demopolis, Ala, of Mrs. Lucy Wooten, of Lenoir county. He was trusted advisor of Governor Richard Caswell.
  • "He was the son of William Whitfield, who emigrated from Jamestown, Va., married Rachel Bryan on Roanoke River, and afterwards lived in Newbern and South Washington. He was wounded by the Indians while on his way from North Carolina to Virginia. The descendants of this ancient couple, who were among the earliest permanent settlers of North Carolina, are now found in nearly every Southern and Western State in the Union, filling positions of honor and trust wherever they have located."
