Dispute: Wheeler, Albert Gallatin Jr. The Genealogical and Encyclopedic History of the Wheeler Family in America, Boston Massachusetts, 1914, James Savages - Genealogy Dictionary, and others - incorrectly identifies the relationships in this family. (see sources below)

Corrections: 1:This Thomas Wheeler born c1620, husband of Joan/Jane, is not the son of Thomas Wheeler (1591-1654) and Anne Halsey. They should be removed from the profile. His parents have not been identified. His dob/bp and location is unknown. His wife Joan/Jane's LNAB should be changed to unknown, unless there are some confirmed sources of her name being Bryan other than as stated in the Wheeler Family on p. 201.

2: The Thomas Wheeler, baptized at Cranfield on April 8, 1620, married Ruth Wood, has been clarified to be a half- brother of Thomas (husband of Anne Halsey).

3: Sergeant Thomas Wheeler, baptized December 8, 1621 (p. 143 Wheeler Fam), parents not identified in that text, is the actual son of Thomas Wheeler and Anne Halsey.

Research Notes

The only source in the profile, The Ogden family in America, on page 54 discusses Elizabeth Wheeler who married Capt. John Ogden. It states Elizabeth was the daughter of Nathaniel Wheeler who in turn was the second son of Thomas Wheeler of Milford, Connecticut. The source also state that Nathaniel married (Esther Bochford) on June 21, 1665 who came to NJ "with the company and signed the agreement". Nathaniel was born in 1639 and died October 4, 1726.

If Nathaniel was born in 1639, his father Thomas would been born in approximately 1619. The source does not state where he was born so the profiles place of birth will be changed to unknown until further sources are available.

Disputed Origins

From https://sallysfamilyplace.com/thomas-wheeler-joane-buckingham/

  • It is established that Thomas of Milford is NOT Capt Thomas Wheeler, a son of Thomas Wheeler "the elder" of Cranfield by his will proven 24 Feb 1634 NOR a son of his brother John. NOR is he Sgt Thomas Wheeler, the son of Thomas Sr of Fairfield CT as set forth in "Wheeler Family in America."
  • Thomas Wheeler of Milford was probably the son of Richard Wheeler ca 1578 - 1616. If so, he was baptized 7 April, 1606 in Cranfield, Bedfordshire.
  • Thomas Wheeler was admitted to the church at Milford 9 Aug 1640.
  • His wife Jane [Joane] was admitted 27 Sept 1640:
  • No evidence has been seen for the oft-repeated assertion that she was a Bryan --Jacobus

This may be date of baptism. Both John and his brother Samuel bear the same date of "birth", so unless they are twins this is likely a baptism date. Some sources say John was born in 1635 or 1636 and Samuel born in 1638. Perhaps the late baptismal records are due to emigration from England to America, specifically Milford, CT.
