Tuskegee Airmen fighter pilot during WWII. Also nephew of Secretary of the NAACP Walter White. Graduate of class 43-G, earning his pilot wings at Tuskegee in 1943. He flew a P-51C fighter, nicknamed "Dopey". Westmoreland was a member of the 332nd Fighter Group, 305th Fighter Squardron based in Italy during World WWII.
His plane went down near Lake Balaton, Hungary in 1944 while returning from an escort mission to Blechammer,Germany. First designated as MIA, Westmoreland's remains were not returned from Europe until December of 1948.
