LuVerne was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Nelson of Albert Lea, Minnesota. LuVerne attended high school in Albert Lea, enlisted in the U.S. Navy the day after his eighteenth birthday, and went through basic training at the U.S. Naval Training Station in Great Lakes, Illinois. On leave from his service as Chief Petty Officer First Class, LuVerne exchanged wedding vows with his sweetheart, Violet B. Holstad, in Bristol Lutheran Church, Lake Mills, Iowa. They became life-long best friends, and he remained a devoted husband until Violet's passing in March of 2016, after 72 years of marriage.≤/span>≤br style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #36322d; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; background-color: #fafafa;" />≤span style="color: #36322d; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; background-color: #fafafa;">During his war-time service in the U.S. Navy, LuVerne served aboard the U.S.S. Melville, a destroyer tender in the North Atlantic, during the time when German U-boats were sinking allied ships daily, including ships that his crew supported. Nelson progressed in rank, and following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he was deployed to the South Pacific, was selected to attend Commissary Steward School, and promoted to the rank of Chief Commissary Steward, responsible for the planning and preparation for feeding thousands of Marines and sailors every day. LuVerne served in the U.S. Navy following the Japanese surrender, when he was part of a naval shore party that went ashore at Hiroshima to survey the area … an experience which he carried on his heart the rest of his life.≤/span>≤br style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #36322d; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; background-color: #fafafa;" />≤span style="color: #36322d; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; background-color: #fafafa;">With two young children at home, LuVerne made the decision to retire from naval service and apply his training as a bakertoward opening a bakery shop in Kiester, Minnesota.
