About Roesia de Vernon

According to the Visitation of Warwich, son Thomas was the father of Johanna "Joan" who married Sir John Swinford.[1]


Thomas Arden of Hanwell knight 9 Ed. I. (1281)=Roisia the daughter of Radi Vernon in his widow gave to his son Ra'do the manor of Pedemore and tenements in Cruddeworth, Minneworth, Moxhill, Eschemenors and Overton, to hold of Will Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick and Matilda his wife and their heirs and if Dn's Radus died without issue then to Robto his son Junior and his heirs to remain in perpetuity without Dat

In 1306, Rose assessed tax for Drayton property. In 1307, she obtained grant of charity in Godstow nunnery for her late husband. She still had possession of Dayton in January of 1316, but later that year Sir Robert was in possession.[2]

Family

Thomas de Arden, of Hanwell and Drayton had four sons with Roesia de Vernon.The younger two were named in their mother's settlement.

  1. Sir Thomas (eldest). According to both Dugdale and Camden, this Thomas was the father of Johanna "Joan" who married Sir John Swinford. However, he must have also had an illegitimate son named Thomas who was grandfather of Joan. (See Research notes.)
