About Lucinda “Lucy” E. (Kennedy) Groom

Lucinda “Lucy” E Kennedy, born Easter Sunday 1876, in Prospect St. Brooklyn, NY.

Obituary:

Mrs. Lucy K. (Jacob) Groom, 72, a resident of Pearl River for the past 49 years, well known former Rockland county Democratic party worker and a widely-known dealer in American antiques, died unexpectedly at her home, 137 Old Middletown road, Tuesday afternoon.
Although not in the best of health for the past few years, her passing came as a sudden shock.
She was the widow of Jacob Groom, who died in September, 1946. Mr. Groom came to Pearl River from Fulton, N. X., with the late Talbot C. Dexter, when the latter moved 'the Dexter Folder Company to its present site. Until his retire-ment, due to poor health, a few years previous to his death, Mr.
Groom was foreman of the folder erecting crew.
Mrs. Groom was born Lucy C. Kennedy in Brooklyn on April 16, 1876. Her father was the late Henry Morse Kennedy, and her mother the former Nancy Cahnbley.
The Kennedy's used to visit the late Judge and Mrs. Samuel Cooper, who resided at 168 Franklin, avenue, Pearl River, the house now occupied by the Milton J. Grant family.
As a girl, Mrs. Groom attended the public schools in Brooklyn and Pratt Institute.
On August 5, 1899, the then Lucy Kennedy married Jacob R. Groom in the Upper Montvale Church. The couple had the house at 144 East Centrale avenue, Pearl River, built and lived there for a time. It is now the home of Miss Anna Gerdes. The Grooms sold that house and had one constructed at 69 Old Middletown road, now occupied by the Heidgerd family, where they resided a short time. Some 35 years ago they had the house at 137 Old Middletown road built and have resided there ever since.
Mrs. Groom was active for years in Pearl River Methodist Church affairs, later becoming affliated with the Nauraushaun Presbyterian Church, where she was also an ardent worker.
For years she worked in behalf of the Rockland County Democratic organiza-tion. Dealing in American antiques was both an advocation and a hobby.
Funeral services were held in the 1 Wyman and Mock Funeral Home, Franklin avenue, Pearl River, at 8 o'clock Thursday evening, Rev. J. : H. Jensen officiating.
Interment will be Friday in Rockland Ceme-tery, Sparkill, at the convenience of the family.
Mrs. Groom is survived by two daughters, Miss Nancy C. Groom and Mrs. Barbara G. Drennan, and one granddaughter, Nancy Lou Drennan, all of Pearl River; four brothers, James L. Kennedy and Orangetown Police Chief Fred Kennedy of Pearl River, Harry M. Kennedy of Babylon, L. I., and Samuel S. Kennedy of Pennsylvania.
