About Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus Deyampert
Lucius built an impressive mansion, named Montevallo, near Scott's Station in Perry County, Alabama. He was a dedicated Methodist and provided for annual religious services on his plantation. He was a founder of Southern University in Greensboro, Alabama and made generous donation for its support. With the outbreak of the War for Southern Independence, Lucius provided money to support military companies to serve in the war. An article in the Alabama Beacon on March 7, 1862, notes that DeYampert provided $1,500 to outfit Company E of the 28th Alabama Infantry organized in Walker County, Alabama. In 1855, DeYampert owned 245 slaves, which is the largest number owned by any person in Perry County history. In 1860, he maintained 78 slaves at his home place, 64 slaves at his lower place, and 94 slaves at his midway place. Lucius' first wife was ANN OVERTON, the daughter of JOHN OVERTON and MARY WINDFIELD, and a member of the Methodist Church. Ann was born on October 29, 1798, and died on February 1, 1832.
